Office Chair Story

In 2004 AVL designed one of the pavilions of the Interpolis insurance company in Tilburg. A truly revolutionary project. Joep could not find a suitable seat for this pavilion, he inquired Lensvelt whether he could make “a silly chair?” This resulted in the AVL office chair as a visually appealing alternative to standard office chair’s that exists today, naturally being a hit amongst the Lensvelt collection.

The AVL office chair also had a few alternate productions fitted for different occasions, all with slightly different outlooks and twists.  Firstly, it was used for the 2014 Nuclear security summit in The Hague also known as the Presidential or Obama chair which is a derivative that has a slightly higher raised back alluding to extra status. Secondly, there was an exemplar made for an art collector who was also a doctor who wanted a version of the Office chair in which he could comfortably converse with his patients that ended up being a version called the “Torture Chair” which embeds a dark humoristic twist. Lastly, a version of the office chair was created for the Eurotop 2014, presented in the Scheepvaart Museum with expensive upholstery designed by Edward van Vliet and a gold plated base making it a chic and expensive version of the original office chair.

Atelier van Lieshout

Joep van Lieshout is a sculpture, visionary and artist.  He has acquired international fame with both autonomous work as well as commissioned work, within all aspects of art, design and architecture. His style is often characterized as quick, bold and eccentric. Van Lieshout’s friendship with Hans Lensvelt dates way back as they both share complementary visions and a similar outlook on life. Atelier van Lieshout (AVL) has designed many special and desired products for Lensvelt which are often seen as modern classics. Joep van Lieshout/AVL, have created a rich ouvre of sculptures and installations, buildings and furniture classified both as utopias and dystopias. His work is characterized by a number of recurring themes, motives and obsessions such as: systems, power, autarky, life, sex and death.

The art pieces and installations are exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide – from the MOMA in New York, the Hayward Gallery in London right down to Centre Pompidou in Paris… and the Lensvelt’s Design experience in Breda.
