Ontwerper en kunstenaar Maarten Baas heeft met zijn unieke visie en creatieve brein de designwereld veroverd. Hij heeft zijn eerste massaproduct gemaakt voor meubellabel Lensvelt, ondanks zijn eerdere belofte (aan zichzelf) om dit niet te doen.

Maarten Baas bedacht een eenvoudige maar originele stoel, wat leidde tot een uniek ontwerp: de iconische Maarten Baas stoel. Deze stoel, met 8 verschillende rugleuningen, lijkt alsof ze door een kind zijn getekend. Dit meesterwerk heeft niet alleen de grenzen van massaproductie verlegd, maar heeft ook de prestigieuze Milano Design Award van 2017 gewonnen voor het beste concept.

Inmiddels is er een complete collectie rondom de originele stoel ontwikkeld. Er zijn barkrukken in twee hoogtes, met en zonder armleuningen, een houten versie van de MB stoel, een stapelbare versie, een in hoogte verstelbare bureaustoel met wielen, een kruk, een bankje en een tafel.

Een belangrijk thema in het werk van Maarten Baas is de rebelse, speelse en theatrale aard van zijn ontwerpen, die vaak doordrenkt zijn met een intellectuele twist.

Voor de presentatie van de Maarten Baas 101 stoel tijdens Milaan Design Week 2017 bedacht Maarten een installatie met de naam “May I have your attention, please?"

May I have your attention, please

Lensvelt heeft met hun opvallende en bekroonde presentaties op de Salone del Mobile in Milaan overduidelijk hun toewijding aangetoond. Deze prestatie illustreert Lensvelt's succesvolle brug tussen de commerciële wereld en gerenommeerde kunstenaars, waaronder niet alleen Maarten Baas, maar ook Joep van Lieshout en Studio Job.

De samenwerking met Maarten Baas vormt opnieuw een voorbeeld van Lensvelt's vermogen om de werelden van handel en hoogwaardige kunst naadloos te verbinden.

Het verhaal

De samenwerking tussen Lensvelt en Maarten Baas begint op 27 oktober 2016. Die avond organiseerden Hans Lensvelt en Anne van der Zwaag een netwerkdiner in de Lensvelt Gallery aan de Herengracht in Amsterdam.

Het gesprek ging over de komende Salone del Mobile in Milaan. Erik Kessels (medeoprichter bureau KesselsKramer) en Anne stelden Hans voor om samen met Maarten Baas een presentatie te maken. Hans Lensvelt bekijkt de website van Maarten Baas op zijn telefoon. Hans' twijfels worden bevestigd als hij de tekst 'Maarten Baas is niet geïnteresseerd in massaproductie' leest.
Lensvelt was CEO van MOOOI en kent Maarten Baas van de MOOOI Smoke Chair en de Smoke Armchair.
Maarten Baas ontwikkelde zich na zijn ontwerpen voor MOOOI van ontwerper tot autonoom kunstenaar, dus Hans zag geen heil in een samenwerking maar Anne van der Zwaag, cultureel ondernemer, was vasthoudend.

En al snel was er een plan en een concept: de presentatie in Milaan zou gaan over de bijna 3.000 exposanten die allemaal schreeuwen om aandacht. Die allemaal roepen:

"May I have Your Attention Please."
